At this point, normally I'd crack a joke. But the commenters at this Deadspin.com post on the story appear to have already made all the good ones. (e.g., "Yao will no doubt be suspended for pot use.")

All kidding aside, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm going to remember Mr. Yao the next time I face a barrier in my own life, literal or otherwise. Nothing, I will remind myself, is insurmountable.
Today I bring you the story of Sapolai Yao, a steeplechaser from Papua New Guinea who competed recently at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

Anyway, Sapolai Yao, as we've established, is a steeplechaser. He is also short, standing a smidge under 4 feet 10 inches tall. These two facts conspired against him last Monday, Oct. 11, in the men's 3km steeplechase final. Late in that race, Yao apparently was just whipped as he approached a barrier.
Before we go further, it's worth noting that this year's Commonwealth Games were an unusually rich source of comic gold, having previously brought us this story on trained monkey guards. Thanks, Commonwealth Games!
