Dr. Benjamin B. Bolger wears the emblems of a variety of universities with the same pride that William and Mary students sport with their green and gold. He began his college experience at the age of 12, and continued to obtain graduate degrees from; Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Teacher College, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Brandeis, and Skidmore University. At the College, Dr. Bolger teaches real estate entrepreneurship at the Mason School of Business.
The Virginia Informer: What made you want to be a professor?
BBB: I have been incredibly fortunate to have studied at top research institutions around the world. I have been mentored, and I have studied with, amazing teachers. I am now delighted to have a fantastic opportunity to contribute myself to the learning of others. Given my exceptional opportunities, I feel a duty to repay the investments that others have made in me, by helping to foster critical and creative thinking in the minds of others.
VAI: Is there any advice you would give to students about their college careers?
BBB: Learning should be a joy. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than learning something new. Take care to avoid situations where the joy of learning can get sucked out of you. Always think about the future with an open mind. Remember, creativity will be your strongest and most enduring asset; be especially diligent to nourish it well throughout your life.
VI: Having pursued your education to such an extensive degree, it's obvious that you have an appetite for learning. Would you say that you prefer your new role as the teacher, to your previous role as pupil?
BBB: Paulo Freire in "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" suggested that good teachers should view themselves as students, and that students - in an empowered learning setting - should also function as teachers. So, for me, I don't see much difference between being a so-called "student" and a so-called "teacher." If I'm a good teacher, I should learn every day from my students. If I am a good student, I should contribute something back - each day - to our learning community.
VAI: You have acquired so many degrees from so many different institutions, do you have a favorite?
BBB: I loved my time at Harvard. I had the chance to work with William Julius Wilson, Samuel P. Huntington,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Robert D. Putnam, and many other world-class scholars that personally impacted my thinking about the world. When I was at Oxford, my meetings with Isaiah Berlin were also very instructive. To be sure, I have had many mentors that I've had along the way that have dramatically shaped my thinking and passions in life; they are the ones that I celebrate the most.
VAI: What is your favorite class to teach?
BBB: I very much enjoyed teaching a freshman seminar entitled "The Sociology of Greed and Altruism." We explored complex questions about human motivations that are truly difficult to unpack and understand. It was also a lot of fun to interact with brand new college students.
VAI: What is your favorite movie/book?
BBB: As a child, I was enthralled with the Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas was an excellent student of powerful mythology and he embedded much of his science fiction epic saga with deeply impactful narrative stories. More recently, I've been quite taken with three films: Casino, Heat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Nixon. Casino is a commanding story of the transformation of a great American modern city. Still today, there is no other place in the world like Las Vegas. Heat is a thoughtful study of crime, obsession,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the complex desires associated with risk. Nixon is a fascinating character study of one of America's most complicated and tragic political figures; an unmatchable story of great promise and greater loss.
As for a book, I think the dictionary is a lot of fun to read; but, I recognize that many people may enjoy doing something else on a Friday evening. I also think the Art of War by Sun Tzu, the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy are true classics. Each of these books are worth reading several times.
VAI: What is your favorite thing to do on campus?
BBB: I like to spend a quiet moment in the shade under a tree next to the Thomas Jefferson statue near the Sunken Garden. For me, it is a very thought provoking spot.
VAI: What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
BBB: Move over Donald Trump…
