Follow Wealthy financier is mysterious funder of ads attacking DeFazio Published: Saturday, October 16,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010, 4:23 PM Updated: Saturday, October 16, 2010, 5:01 PM Robert Mercer, the co-CEO of one of the world's largest hedge funds, is the mysterious donor who has been paying for $300,000 of attack ads aimed at Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore.
The attack ads, which also praise DeFazio's opponent, Republican Art Robinson, have been attracting national attention for weeks because the group running them has refused to say where their funding comes from.
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new federal disclosure reports that have just been filed show that the money for Concerned Taxpayers of America comes from Robert Mercer, who heads Renaissance Technologies of Setauket, N.Y.along with Peter Brown.
Mercer and Brown took over the firm this year from James Simons, a "secretive mathematician and Cold War code breaker," according to The Wall Street Journal. Simons pioneered the use of mathematical formulas and computers to conduct financial trades.
The Journal described Mercer as a political conservative and National Rifle Association member who tends to avoid contact with the firm's employees outside of official meetings.
"I'm happy going through my life without saying anything to anybody,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mercer told the Journal. He said that he enjoyed playing with a giant model train railroad in the basement of his Long Island mansion. (Interestingly, though, he filed a lawsuit accusing a contractor of overcharging him about $2 million for building the setup, which he said was actually only worth about $700,000).
Here's another sign of Mercer's wealth. His daughter and her husband have spent more than $28 million buying six adjoining apartments in one of New York City's toniest apartment buildings.
Mercer is also a frequent contributor who has given the Republican Party nearly $70,000 this year. The DeFazio campaign said Mercer contributed $9,600 directly to Robinson for his campaign and that Robinson said he knew the Mercer family.
There could be a lot of reasons that Mercer could want DeFazio out of office. DeFazio frequently rails against Wall Street financiers and has called for a tax on securities trades (although, contrary to an e-mail rocketing around the internet, DeFazio has not sought a tax on everyday transactions).
