Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said Jackson’s test result is “frustrating and disappointing …for the entire organization, nfl for sale,”? in a briefing with the media at One Buccaneer Place.
??So Jackson could possibly return to the team?in 2011, if the NFL determines that he has?taken care of his problem and if the Buccaneers decide they can live with the inherent risk of a depending upon a repeat substance abuse offender who will have missed an entire year of games and practice, following his third positive test.
?Veteran?Sean Jones is the team’s other starting safety.
?Jackson served a four-game suspension?at the start of?the 2009 season after testing positive, and the Buccaneers lost all four games on the way to?a 0-7 start and 3-13 finish.
?Morris was unavailable Wednesday after the news broke of Jackson’s latest suspension, as the 2-0 Buccaneers are preparing to host the 2-0 Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.
?”Tanard is a talented young man whom we hope is able to use this year to put his troubles behind him and ultimately return a stronger man and player,” Dominik said in a statement released by the team.
?”Talking to coach Morris, he’s going to take the next few days to determine who is going to be the starter going forward,” Dominik said, adding that the team also has a?vacancy to fill on its 53-man roster ahead of Sunday.
?Rookie Cody Grimm and third-year man Corey Lynch are the other safeties on the roster, but neither of them has experience as a regular in the NFL. However, one of them will become the third safety and see spot duty when?Morris wants to rest one of the starters.
?”He’s killing us,” head coach Raheem Morris said last season, during Jackson’s first suspension.
?Jackson is in the final year of his four-year?contract, which will carry over now into next season, Dominik said,?meaning he will not be eligible for free agency in 2011.
?TAMPA _?Buccaneers?safety Tanard Jackson was suspended indefinitely without pay Wednesday by the National Football League for violating the league’s substance abuse policy a third time.
? “Tanard, I think, is one of the top safeties in the league,” said Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid last year.
?It was Jackson’s?second such violation in as many years and will cost him 14 games and the remainder of his $550,000 salary for this season.
?”I was happy that we had five safeties that did play well this preseason,” Dominik said.
? Jackson?led the Buccaneers in interceptions with five in 2009, despite missing the first four games.
??Jackson was developing into?a Pro Bowl-caliber player.
?Both of the players who started in Jackson’s spot during last year’s suspension are no longer with the team. Jermaine Phillips started the first two games and Will Allen started the next two.

??”You have to love this game, your team, your teammates, more than you love to get in trouble …more than you love anything else,” Morris said last year, in reference to Jackson.
?”It’s up to Tanard whether the team and our fans eventually realize his considerable promise,” Dominik said.
?A fourth-round draft choice by the Buccaneers out of Syracuse in 2007,? Jackson has been a starter all four seasons and the only games he missed are those for which he was suspended.
?”I learned a lot,” Jackson said last October, when he returned from his suspension. ?”Having time to reflect how I’ve hurt myself and how I’ve hurt the people around me,football uniforms, such as my teammates, coaches and people who trusted me I’m disappointed in that. But the main thing is that this is what I love to do. This is where I need to be.”
?Jackson, football jerseys, 25,?is eligible to apply to the NFL for reinstatement next year, 60 days prior to his suspension anniversary date.
?But?Sept. 22, 2011,?is the earliest date that Jackson could be reinstated by the NFL, meaning he would miss training camp.
?Sabby Piscitelli, who had been the third safety in the rotation, is likely going to become a starter again, although Dominik didn’t say that would be the case. Piscitelli gave up two touchdown passes in last year’s season-opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
